I’m writing this post today from the cutest café in Singapore. It’s Friday and I’m not working because it’s “Recharge day” in my company. Since COVID started they give us one extra day off to recharge every quarter. Today is that day.

And what better day to recharge than writing a blog post again after so long. I felt inspired today by an Adidas jacket that I found in my wardrobe yesterday. It was on a hanger, under a black blazer, so it wasn’t really on sight everyday. Somehow it fell off and I saw it and have been wearing it since. This morning I woke up and after brushing my teeth and doing my skincare routine, I put it on immediately.
I realized that the jacket is over 15 years old. And I wondered how come it is still in my wardrobe, and not only that, but how come I brought it all the way from Spain to Singapore. Obviously the jacket is really nice, a classic Adidas sporty bomber style jacket, with that cool retro vibe to it. The signature Adidas Originals stripes and logo are in gold, which is a rare find. But that’s not the main reason why it’s such a treasured piece. The main reason is the emotional connection that I have to it.
emotional connection with clothes
I bought that jacket with my friend Elena. In fact we bought the set of jacket and pants. We both got the same one because we have a similar taste in clothes. There were two versions of the jacket, one with a hoodie and one without the hoodie. I chose the one with the hoodie, she chose the other one. After some time, she told me how she loved the hoodie and I told her how I really liked the one without it, so we swapped them! She had mine and I had hers.
Every time I see this jacket I think of her and our friendship that is so dear to me. And there is the emotional connection making a simple jacket so special.
There are different ways to have an emotional connection with the clothes you choose to buy. The story I just told you is one way, but similarly you can create an emotional connection with the clothes you buy by shopping only what you really, really love and associating it to a cherished moment of your life.
Are you planning to buy something special? Maybe a treat to yourself? Why not wait and buy it in the company of someone dear to you, or while in a nice trip that you are going to do in the near future? That will make that piece extra special.
Another way of feeling connected to our clothes is by knowing the values behind the brand you are choosing to buy, the hows and the why’s. When you know where a dress was made, out of what fabric. When you know who made it and how the brand treats the people who make their clothes, the people who made your dress… Then you can be sure of where your money is going and you feel proud of making that purchase. Then something clicks in your head and you have that lightbulb moment that feels so good.
Once you try that type of shopping, it’s hard to go back to fast fashion. Sure, you can go to Zara and buy something you love, but that emotional connection will be missing, and you will know it.
