It can get overwhelming when you are trying to be more eco-friendly with your choices but you can’t find things that just check all the boxes you need them to check. I’ve personally found the bathroom to be one of the easiest places to start when trying to be more sustainable, and the one where I’ve been most successful at.
Finding alternatives to body care products that usually come in plastic bottles has never been easier. There are plenty of brands that are taking a sustainable approach to packaging, be it having minimal packaging, incorporating carton paper or even glass. Those can be reused and recycled infinite times and that makes it a much better alternative to plastic packaging.
I’m personally a big fan of glass jars for liquids and creams. I understand that it makes the product heavier, which impacts carbon emissions, but it also makes the product more luxurious and safer for the consumer, as there are no plastic particles being transfer to the product itself. This is particularly important in places with hot weather like Singapore, as the heat can easily affect the product.
Low-waste hair care alternatives that I’m loving
A few months ago I discovered a solid shampoo from Lush that has completely changed my perception on solid shampoos. Years ago when I was still living in Spain a friend recommended one of the solid shampoos from this brand, the pink one. I gave it a go and hated it. My hair felt like hay, so dry and so hard to comb through. It was a no-no for me. But a few months ago I discovered they Honey solid shampoo and I’m a convert. Last week I bought it for the second time and that’s when I thought I should probably share my opinion in case someone is looking for a good shampoo that’s low waste and works!
This shampoo leaves my hair feeling so clean, and it makes it last longer between washes. I’m a convert. It’s a clarifying one so I don’t use it every single time I wash my hair, but more like every other time.
In between washes with the Lush solid shampoo I use the Oway rebuilding bath. I discovered this one recently and loved the brand ethics. They use sustainably source and organic ingredients and glass packaging. This shampoo has a really nice citrusy scent to it that I love and leaves the hair soft and clean. It’s an Italian brand and I was pleasantly surprised to see that they sell this brand in Lazada Singapore and the parcel arrived in two days! I’ll be trying more products of this brand in the future for sure.
Low-waste Body care alternatives that I’m loving
The Lush soap bars are widely famous, but sometimes the variety of choice can be a bit overwhelming. In my trip to the US last year I was introduced to the KARMA range and it smells amazing! They don’t have everything in Singapore, but they do have the Karma soap bar, which is good enough for me and my shower! I mean I would love the bath bombs but I would need a bath tub for that lol. I love using this soap bar in the morning, the scent is so calming and exotic and it stays on my skin for a few hours and I just love it! I’ve repurchased this soap bar twice, every time I buy a bigger piece lol. And I asked for a sample of the Karma body lotion to try too.
Although I keep trying body lotions and they are very handy to have, I find it hard to put a cream product on my skin in this Singapore heat. What I find that works best for me is oil. Yes, body oil. You keep it in the shower and after you are done and before you reach for the towel, you massage it all over your body. The water on your skin makes the oil absorb faster and it leaves your skin so soft and moisturised. I love to use the Shea Fabulous Oil from L’Occitane because it comes in a glass jar and because it has a pump. And the scent is gorgeous too, very clean and perfect for after a shower. They have the Almond one also which smells amazing but it comes in spray format and I find it a bit harder to apply with wet hands. The pump is much easier! One other thing I love from L’Occitane is that it’s one of the first beauty brands that looked into sustainability since the beginning. They source their ingredients with care and I love that they do glass jars, tin containers and also refillable options for most of their products. Their plastic containers are mostly made out of recycled plastic. They also have a recycling program where you can take in empties from any brand and receive stamps that you can then exchange for gifts. This is the type of brands I like to go for when I shop!
But I digress. I wanted to talk about the scrub I use too because it’s just so good. The Almond range from L’Occitane is one of the most luxurious one. The packaging is beautiful, mostly glass jars and refillable options, and the scent is just a delight. I keep the Almond Delicious Paste scrub in my shower and I love using it once a week. It’s made with real almond bits that exfoliate your skin gently and it comes in a glass jar. I then follow with the shea body oil that I smother all over my body and then I dry my skin with a towel. I must say that this combo makes me feel like a spoiled queen with the softest skin. It’s the ultimate shower treat!
